Periodontal Exam & X-rays

In order for your periodontist to determine a baseline on the health of your gums and teeth, we will be doing a PSR, or Periodontal Screening and Recording. This includes exposing a set of x-rays and doing a full periodontal probing.

There are spaces between your teeth and gums called pockets that we measure in millimeters. These measurements help us evaluate the progression of the gum diseases, gingivitis and periodontal disease. Normal, healthy measurements range from 1-3mm; 4mm and higher indicate gum disease.

Different types of dental x-rays, include bitewing x-rays, periapical x-rays, and panoramic x-rays, and each has a specific purpose. They help the dentist confirm diagnoses of cavities and periodontal disease, as well as be a great tool to help you, the patient, see what we are diagnosing. Bitewing x-rays show the crowns of the upper and lower teeth including the height of the bone surrounding them. Periapical x-rays show the crown, the roots, and the bone around the specific tooth we are concerned about. Panoramic x-rays let us visualize the entire dentition, the jaw bones, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and more.
